World Environment Day celebrated on June 05, every year, is by far the biggest acknowledgment of the critical role that the environment plays in our existence. Initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the day has been celebrated annually since 1973, thus making this year a historic milestone. 2022 marks 50 years since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment which is globally considered to be the first international meeting on the environment.

This year the slogan for WED celebrations is “Only One Earth" with a focus on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”. Celebrations at CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (CSIR-IITR) Lucknow are spread over two days. Delivering the 26th Dr C.R. Krishnamurthy Memorial Oration at CSIR-IITR, Professor Rup Lal, a renowned molecular biologist and NASI Senior Scientist Platinum Jubilee fellow at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Delhi, stressed the fact that understanding microbiome science can lead to better handling of human health and the environment. In addition, studying the environment microbiome, especially microbial populations from extreme environments, can help mitigate environmental pollution, he said.

Presiding over the function, Professor S.K. Barik, Director, CSIR-IITR highlighted the contributions made by CSIR–IITR toward the environment. Sharing his thoughts, he said it is our collective responsibility to take care of environmental protection.

On this occasion, CSIR-IITR, Lucknow signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Pesticide Formulation Technology (IPFT), Gurugram. The MOU was signed by Dr S.K. The fact that scientific research is one of the finest outcomes of human intellect and is fundamental to human progress is widely accepted. However, equally critical is the maintenance of an equilibrium between nature, the universe, and all forms of matter that encompass this goal. Science is critical to tackle complex challenges facing humanity such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and poverty reduction. To reemphasize this fact, the theme for National Science Day 2022 is 'Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future'.

National Science Day 2022 was celebrated at CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research with a popular lecture delivered by Dr Binita Phartiyal, from Birbal Sahni Institute of Paleosciences, Lucknow.
